Horrible Death
    A few minutes after 11 o'clock on Monday morning, the aged father of Mr. Asa Dilts, of Raritan (who lives with his son-in-law, Mr. Wm. N. Adair) while walking on the railroad track near the crossing of the west end of Somerville, stepped out of the way of the 11.11 train bound East.  In doing so, he was overtaken by a coal train bound West, which caught him in its machinery and dragged him until the train was stopped....  He was about 80 years of age.

    Jacob Snook, the notorious Mountain outlaw, has closed his earthly career.  He died in the New Jersey State Prison on Friday last from pneumonia....

    On Monday night or early on Tuesday morning, a party of men while drinking in a saloon in New Brunswick, got into a quarrel and it is alleged a fight ensued, during which Edward Van Tilburg was pushed or thrown out of doors, when it is supposed he fell and struck his head against a stone stoop.  He was picked up unconscious and carried home, but never rallied.  A doctor attended him, but to no purpose, as he died at an early hour on Wednesday morning.

A Jealous Lover's Awful Crime
    The little village of Ferndale, a station on the Lehigh Valley Railroad, seven miles north of Bethlehem, Pa., was the scene of a terrible tragedy last New Years night, the murder of Miss Lizzie Davis by her lover, John Haddock, and the latter's subsequent suicide....

    Henry Beemer, of Beemerville, Sussex county, aged 82, sat up to see the old year out and retiring soon after midnight, was seized with a fit of coughing and died about two hours afterwards.  He had been troubled with asthma.

    On Thursday last, Mr. Nixon, living near Branchville, returned from the woods, where he had been chopping and complained of feeling unwell.  He lighted his pipe, and soon after fell from his chair dead.  Mr. Nixon was a man well advanced in years, and leaves a family.

    Rev. E. C. Romine, of the North Philadelphia Baptist Association, (formerly of this county) buried his wife last week.  She was a daughter of the Rev. W. E. Watkinson, pastor of the Baptist Church in Baptisttown.

    An old colored man, known to the poeple of Readington township as "Old Caesar", died near White House last week, aged 113 years, it is alleged.  It is known for a certainty he was over 100.

    Capt. John P. Britton, aged 90 years, while temporarily insane, committed suicide at Black Rock, Conn., last Sunday morning, by shooting himself through the heart.

    From Glen Gardner comes the painful intelligence, that the only daughter of Thomas L. Anderson, died on New Year's of typhoid fever, in her 17th year.  On Sunday previous he buried his youngest child, aged three years, and there is little hopes entertained for the recovery of the three boys down with the same disease.

    Lewis Young, Esq., an old resident of Lebanon township, died on Tuesday last aged 73 years.

    Thomas Cherry, one of the oldest and most respected citizens of this place, died at the residence of his son-in-law, George Gray, on Tuesday last, aged about 86 years.
 

State Items

    About ten days ago Mr. Jos. Paffen, a well-known painter, living in South Egg Harbor, held a conversation with one of the officials of the Narrow Gauge at their depot, from whom he received the order to paint the new depot.  In departing he stepped backward off one of the cars of a train standing on the track, which suddenly started, in consequence of which Mr. Paffen fell to the ground, receiving fatal injuries from the effect of which he died on Saturday last.

    New Brunswick is excited over the marriage of Mr. Abraham Voorhees, President of the defunct State Bank of that city, to Miss Mattie Van Nostrand.... He is on the shady side of  70 and she is but 23 years old.

    A laborer named John Just, employed in building the Netherwood Hotel at Plainfield, died on Sunday after about three hours sickness...

    On Tuesday morning the body of John Williams was found lying on the track of the Easton and Amboy Railroad near Springtown, Warren county.... Williams was about 60 years old.

    Edward White, Surrogate of Cumberland county, fell dead on the steps of his residence in Bridgeton at noon Tuesday.  Apoplexy was the cause.

    The wife of Mr. John Herbert, proprietor of Herbert's mills, near Bound Brook, took a carriage ride to Somerville on Wednesday last, and suddenly died of paralysis at Abm. Kershow's hotel, at Somerville.  She was about 43 years of age.

    Elizabeth Hollis, aged 88 years, living near Woodbury, went to the pump on Friday last to get a drink of water.  While drinking, she felt a chill pass over her, and entering the house she sat by the stove to recover warmth, but died almost immediately.

Death of Clerk Abel
    It becomes our painful duty to announce the death of George W. Abel, Clerk of Hunterdon County, which occurred about 2 o'clock last Saturday morning.... George W. Abel was a son of ex-Sheriff Enoch Abel, of Union township, and was born in Bethlehem, and was born in Bethlehem township in the year 1839....

    Wm. R. Prall, Esq., of Changewater, whose sudden blindness we noticed last week, died on Sunday, 20th inst., aged about 80 years.

    Green Hummer, an employee of the Central Railroad, at Junction, has died from lockjaw.  About three weeks ago he mashed his thumb and caught cold in it, producing lockjaw.
 

    Thomas Hunt, a well-known New York merchant, died at his residence, No. 102 Remsen Street, Brooklyn, on Friday week, in the seventy-ninth year of his age... He was born in this county, in 1799, and was descended from a family well-known in the Revolutionary War.  His father, Adam Hunt, fought in the battle of Princeton, and his grandfather, James Hunt, fought under General Washington in the battles of Long Island, Princeton, Monmouth, Trenton, Brandywine and Yorktown.

    On Sunday morning, Jacob O. Brown, of Martinville, Somerset county, walked about two miles distant to the Mt. Horeb M. E. church, of which he was a member.  At the close of the morning service, the minister asked Mr. Brown to make a prayer.  He complied, and when the listeners supposed that he was about to say "Amen", his voice ceased.  The congregation remained with bowed heads for a few minutes, then looked up and found that Mr. Brown was dead.  Mr. Brown was about seventy years of age.

    Rev. Father Connolly, pastor of St. John's R. C. Church, of Lambertville, died on Sunday monring, 20th inst., of typhoid fever, which he contracted while visiting the dying bed of one of his parishioners.  Father Connolly was a young man, being about 37 years of age.

    George P. Gordon, inventor and manufacturer (at Rahway, N.J.), of the widely known Gordon job press died of disease of the heart at 3 o'clock Saturday morning, at his residence on Freemason street, Norfolk, Va.  He had bee ill about four months, and retained full consciousness to the last.  Mr. Gordon was born in Salem, N.H., on the 21st of April, 1810.  At an early age he removed to New York, where he learned the printing business...  Mr. Gordon was married twice, and leaves a grown-up daughter by his first wife.  His second wife survives him.

    Mrs. Marcy, the wife of General Marcy and mother of Mrs. McClellan, died on Tuesday afternoon last at Baltimore...

Murder
    On Tuesday last, a young lady, named Bartholomew, living near Bath, Pa., died very suddenly, and the funeral was to have taken place Thursday, but the Coroner, being notified, took charge of the body and impaneled a jury.  It was suspected that a servant girl named Spangler, 18 years of age, with whom the father, who is 86 years of age, had been living on terms of intimacy, had put poison in the food of the young lady for the purpose of securing the old man's money.

The Storm
    The storm of last Thursday night and Friday struck Manhattan Beach, Coney Island, N.Y., with terrific force.  Several shanties were swept away and so far as known, eight persons were drowned.  The victims were Mrs. Wayne and three children, Mrs. Brennan and two children and a woman whose named is unknown....  The engine and baggage car of the train which left New York Friday evening, on the Long Branch Division of the New Jersey Central, were precipitated down a washout, near Great Pond, and a brakeman, named John Bateman, was killed and the fireman slightly injured.

    Among the mourners at the funeral of Engineer Hatch, at West Winsted, Conn., last Sunday, was his mother, whose life has been one iliad of woes.  Two of her brothers were murdered, a third was drowned, her sister's husband was killed in the war, her own husband fell dead in his chair, and finally, her only son, was a victim of the railroad disaster of last week.

Local Department

    Asa Rittenhouse, hotel keeper at Milford, has recently buried two of his children, and a third one is not expected to recover.  We understand that typhoid fever is the cause of the affliction.
 

Three Days A Bride
    John M. Maberry, of Stanhope, N.J., was married on Thursday of week before last to Mamie M., youngest daughter of Michael Uhler, who lives at Uhlertown, Pa.  On the following Sunday, Mr. Maberry was a corpse.  His remains were interred in the Frenchtown Cemetery on Thursday last.

    On the 26th ult., in Milford, John Duckworth died, aged 94 years, the oldest inhabitant of Holland township...
 

Longevity
    Our Lambertville correspondent furnishes us with the following facts relative to the longevity of some of the citizens of Hunterdon county, in this State:
    Mrs. Sarah Marshall, widow of Philip Marshall, reached her 91st year on the 25th inst.  She lives in Lambertville and enjoys her usual health.  She is the mother of James W. Marshall, of Colloma, Col., the original discover of gold in that State.  She is the only surviving constituent member of the First Baptist Church in that city, which was constituted 52 years ago.

    Mrs. Brittain, living in Church street, in that city, is in her 102d year.  There are quite a number over 90 years - Anna Moore, John R. Larison, Simon Myres, Daniel Heath, and others.

    Last year, Garret Wilson and Catharine Ryan died, each in the 96th year of their ages.

    One family alone has the following record:  The only ten children of William and Catharine Dilts, whose names and ages are as follows, are all living, except Holcombe Dilts, who was killed by accident on Central Railroad of New Jersey, about two weeks ago, in his 80th year.  The others are: John Dilts, 82; Robert, 78; William, 64; Hester Hunt, 84; Mary Menaugh, 76; Hannah Hice, 74; Rebecca Wolverton, 72; Susan Hunt, 69, and Cahtarine Shadmyer, 66.  Their mother, Catharine Dilts, died at the close of her 94th year, and their father died very old.  The family was raised at Sandy Ridge, 4 miles north of Lambertville.

    Thomas L. Anderson and wife, at Glen Gardner, mourn the loss of their fourth child from typhoid fever.

Obituary
    On Tuesday, at her residence near Frenchtown, died Mrs. Ann Everitt, relict of the late Daniel Everitt, and mother of Wilson Everitt, baggage master on the Bel. Del. Railroad, in the 93d year of her age.... Her father was a soldier in the Revolutionary war, and fought under Washington at the battle of Trenton in 1776, and died at his home near Milford, N.J., on the Pennsylvania side of the river, at the advanced age of ninety-nine years.  Mrs. Everitt was the mother of eleven children, forty-seven grand children, forty-seven great-grand children and two great-great grand children - a total of 107 - all living to mourn her loss.  -  Phillipsburg Democrat.

    Mr. James Lewis, of Heislerville, received a letter a few days ago informing of the death of a bachelor uncle in California, who is reported to be worth one and a half millions of dollars.  Mr. Lewis is the only heir.

    In Locktown, Feb. 4, at the residence of his son-in-law, Francis Rittenhouse, Daniel Heath, in the 87th year of his age.  Mr. Heath was born and had always lived within two miles of Locktown.

    Near Fairview, Ill., Jan. 22, Ann Young, wife of the late Jacob Young, formerly of this county, aged about 81 years.

    In Asbury, Warren county, Oct. 29, Elizabeth, wife of Charles Robins, aged 82 years, 1 month and 25 days.

    In Asbury, Warren county, Jan. 30, Charles Robins, aged 89 years, 1 month and 18 days.
The above aged couple were born in the township of Alexandria, Hunterdon county, and lived together as husband and wife for more than sixty years.

    Mrs. Maria T. True, a widow, 67 years of age, residing at East Orange, was struck and instantly killed by the Dover express train going west on the Delaware Lackawanna and Western Railroad, at Newark.

    An ancient lady named Hannah Longear, who resides at Beemerville, Sussex county, ninety-five years of age, and hale and hearty, has just cut nearly a full set of teeth and has received her second sight.

Sudden Death
    On Thursday evening last, while Miss Hettie Imlay, an aged maiden lady of our town, was on her way to the lecture in the Presbyterian Church, she was suddenly taken with a fainting fix when near the Church and had to be assisted into the house of a neighbor.  Partly recovering, she was removed to her boarding house and a physician summoned, but nothing could be done to restore her to health or consciousness, and in a few hours she was a corpse.  She was aged 66 years.
 

State Items

    Catharine Kitzner, aged 36, was found dead in her house, on Nelson's street, Jersey City, on Wednesday morning.  She had evidently been dead several days.

    Wm. H. Black, local editor of the Mt. Holly Herald, died of paralysis on the 8th inst., aged 51 years.  His funeral took place Thursday.

    John I. Van Horn, aged 93, the oldest resident of Hudson county, died at his home in Communipaw last Monday.  He died in the house in which he was born, and during the entire 93 years of his life was never away from home for any considerable period.
 

A Mystery Solved
    On Christmas eve, Jennie Moore, a young woman residing in John street, Belleville, disappeared from her home and all attempts to discover her whereabouts were unavailing.  She had but just recovered from a fever, and her mind was somewhat affected.  Monday, two boys, while playing on the bank of the river near Hill's thread works, in East Newark, noticed something floating on the water.  They notified Constable Woerner, who procured a boat, rowed out to the spot indicated by the boys and found that what they had seen was the body of a woman.  He secured the corpse and notified Coroner Crane, who had it removed to a suitable place.  Thinking that the body resembled the description of Miss Moore, he sent word to her family, and her brother and young man who was paying attentions to her came to East Newark and identified the body...
 

Local Department

    Peter Ditmars, late of the firm of Large & Ditmars, at White House Station, died suddenly last Saturday.
 

    Captain D. M. Trimmer, a prominent citizen of Hackettstown, died in that town on last Thursday week.  He was active in politics and was twice elected Mayor of Hackettstown.  He served in the war of the Union as Captain of Company H., 31st N.J. Volunteers.

A Warning
    Wm. J. Raub, a resident of Easton, died on Saturday night week from a singular cause.  About nine months ago he pared a corn on his foot, and inflammation set in.  Several times since then portions of his foot had to be cut away, and his sufferings were intense up to the time of his death.

    Our death column last week contained the notice of the demise of David Jackson, Esq., of Sergeantsville.  Mr. Jackson died suddenly on Sunday, the 17th inst...  His age was about 67 years.

    The death of the venerable Dr. Ludlow, of Neshanic, removes another old landmark in the ministry.  He has been over 56 years pastor of the Neshanic Church, although a few years past the Rev. John Hart has done the pastoral work and preached as the Doctor's helper.  The cause of death was paralysis.

    Frederick Bloom, an old resident of Kingwood township, died suddenly at his residence last Thursday morning, aged 84 years.

    Mrs. Lucy Roberson, widow of the late Thomas Roberson, of Frenchtown, died on Monday afternoon last, after a long and useful life of 80 years.

    Mrs. Anna Corson, widow of the late Jacob Corson, and mother of Freeholder Watson B. Corson, of Clinton, William Corson, of High Bridge, and of John Corson, of Lambertville, died at her residence in Clinton one week ago last Monday, in the 78th year of her age.

    Died, in this place, on Tuesday morning, February 26, 1878, Mrs. Jacob Bowman, of starvation....

Burned To Death
    Mrs. Margaret Hazzard, a lady nearly 80 years old, living near Asbury, Warren county, was found burned to death in her house on Thursday morning last...

    Amos Willis, Sr., a highly respected resident of Rowandtown, Camden county, died on Monday the 25th ult., at the advanced age of 97 years.

    Another fatal kerosene accident occurred in Jersey City on Wednesday evening.  Ella Sexton, of Morgan street, undertook to fill a lighted lamp, when it exploded, setting fire to her clothing.

    There lived in Bayonne, on terms of the greatest intimacy, the family of Mr. Fenton and Mr. Russell.  Four years ago the heads of these respected families were seized with illness, and both died on the same day and about the same hour.  A few days ago their widows were afflicted with sickness at almost the same time, and died on the same day and nearly the same hour.

    Benjamin Franklin Wade died at his residence, Jefferson, Ohio, on Saturday last.  He was United States Senator for 18 years and after the assassination of Lincoln in 1865, he became President, pro tem of the Senate and acting vice President of the United States and in March 1867, he was elected President of the Senate.
 

State Items

    William Halstead, one of the oldest members of the New Jersey bar, and member of Congress in 1839, died in Trenton on Monday.

    On Friday the Rev. Mr. Shaw, of Paterson, married Wong Sing Bow, a Chinaman, to a Miss Fannie Kiersted, an American girl of nineteen.

    George Utter, of Lumberton, Burlington county, died last week of hiccoughs, after suffering from them continuously for three days and nights.

    Mary Ellen Hennion, aged 9, being left with two young children in a barn, in which the family lived, at West Paterson, was burned to death on Saturday evening from her clothes taking fire at the stove.
 

    George Haugh?, an old resident of Lambertville, familiarly known as "Daddy" Haugh, died at his residence on South Main street, on March 1st, aged 104 years.

    On Saturday morning, 2d inst., a little daughter of John Mitchell, of West Amwell township, aged about 6 years, was burned to death by her clothes taking fire from the stove...

    On Saturday morning week, the wife of William Cray, of Neshanic, fell down stairs, and but shortly thereafter gave birth to a child.  On Sunday morning the mother and child both died.
 

Sad Death
    Thursday night, the 21st inst., Peter Wene, of Alexandria township, was found dead at his residence near Mt. Pleasant.  It is believed that he committed suicide, as laudanum and arsenic were found in his pockets....  He leaves a wife and eight children to mourn his loss.

    Henry Kandle and his wife lay dead at their home in Millville at the same time, and were buried the same day.

    Silas Smith, of Frelinghuysen township, Sussex county, who would have been 95 years old had he lived until August, died on Thursday last on the farm upon which he was born and resided all his life.

    One day last week a little three-year old son of Mrs. Garretson, of Bound Brook, got hold of some matches, and before it was discovered had eaten a portion of the friction therefrom, which caused his death the next day.

    It is given as a stubborn fact that a hen belonging to Richard Sutton, of White House, recently laid four eggs almost as large as a small goose egg, which on being opened, were found to contain three yolks.

    Our old friend Col. Geo. F. Crater, formerly of the Union Hotel in this place, but more recently of the Pacific Hotel New York, is about to remove to Budd's Lake, Morris county, N.J., and take charge of the "Sharp Hotel" at that place...

Mysterious Death
    Capt. W. W. Abbott, of Company L, 38th Regiment N.J.V., resident of Lambertville, was away from his family from Tuesday last until Friday, which was an unusual thing for him, when the family became alarmed, and fearing that he had come to some illfate, search for him was commenced on Friday morning in every direction.... and at 3 o'clock on that day Michael Smith found the body at the bottom of the Canal, about seventy-five years below the Railroad corssing of the Flemington Railroad and about thirty yards from his residence...  He leaves a wife and several children.

Sudden Death
    Israel Wilson, formerly of West Amwell, who sold his farm a year ago and removed to Lambertville, where he had just finished a neat new house on Union street, commenced to move his goods into it on Saturday afternoon last, when, he being the first member of the family to enter the new residence on the occasion, fell to the floor dead in less than two minutes after he entered the door.... He was aged about 62 years.

Death of Mrs. Bonner
    Mrs. Robert Bonner, wife of the proprietor of the New York Ledger, died Tuesday night of consumption, in the forty-ninth year of her age.  As Miss Jane McConlis the deceased, a native of the County Donegal, in the north of Ireland, came to this county with her parents in 1839, being at that date ten years of age....  Robert Bonner and Miss McConlis, then 31 year of age, were married quietly May 21, 1850, five years before the Ledger was started...

    Near Flemington, April 1st, 1878, John Hopewell, son of George and Adelia Capner, and grandson of John C. Hopewell, aged 14 years and 9 months.
 

    Mrs. Morris, of South Camden, who was some time ago bitten in the arm by a cat, died on Friday night.  Immediately after death her arm turned black and mortified.
 

Local Department

    Asher Dilts, living near Readington, was found dead in his barn last Tuesday morning.
 

    We last week announced the death of David Welsh, of Mechanicsville.  The death of this gentleman was very sudden and unexpected.  On Thursday afternoon, 28th ult., he was seized with severe pains in his side, which the doctors pronounced "cramp colic," and although every effort was made to relieve his sufferings, he continued to fail rapidly until death ensued twenty-four hours thereafter.  He was 74 years of age.

Sudden Death
    Joab P. Hunt, died suddenly at his farm in Woodsville, Mercer county, about six miles from this city, on Tuesday morning.... It will be remembered that Mr. Hunt was married to Miss Martha K. Dilts, of this city, on the 20th of last February.  He lost his first wife some years ago, and leaves several children, all of whom are grown up.  -  Lambertville Beacon.

Death of "Boss" Tweed
    William M. Tweed, known throughout the United States as "Boss" Tweed, died on Friday noon last, in Ludlow street jail, New York, aged 55 years, from a combination of diseases...
 

State Items

    A deed dated in 1734, and conveying 40 acres of land in what is now the town of Westfield, to John Robeson, for the sum of 20 Pounds, was left for recording in the Union County Clerk's Office, at Elizabeth, a few days ago.
 

    Between four and five A.M., on Friday last, an oil train ran into the rear end of a freight train, on the Lehigh Valley Railroad, near Slatington, Pa...  William Shoemaker of Lockport and an unknown man were instantly killed.

    Another sudden death was that of William Martin, of Bethlehem township, which occurred on the 4th inst.  He was about 86 years of age, but very active.

Sad Accident
    Thomas Jobes?, a well known retired farmer living near Mechanicsville, this county, left White House Station on Saturday, 6th inst., to visit a daughter living in Kansas.  On Monday afternoon word was received that he had been killed on the route.  It appears that he fell from a train on the Pan Handle Road at New Comerstown, Ohio, and was instantly killed.  His remains were returned on Tuesday and interred at White House on Wednesday.  He was about 75 years of age.

Killed On The Rail
    A sad accident occurred Friday evening, 5th inst., in front of the depot in Glen Gardner.  Theodore, a son of Abraham Skillman, aged 16 years, attempted to jump on a passing coal train, to ride home, and was thrown under the cars, having both legs severed below the knees, one thigh mashed and one leg badly mangled above the knee...  The youth lived in great agony until the following evening, some twenty-four hours after the terrible accident.

Information Wanted
    Mary Oberdorfer alias Kitty Heenan, adopted daughter of Charles Oberdorfer, living between Pluckamin and Liberty Corner, left her home suddenly on Monday, April 1st, bare-headed, and since than a diligent inquiry has failed to discover her whereabouts.  She is about 13 years old, rather stout, of fresh complexion, quite near sighted, and has luxuriant brown hair of a slight yellowish tinge..

Born In 1764
    James James, or "Double Jimmy", as he is more familiarly called, lives on a farm twelve miles south of Weatherford, Parker county, Texas, with his daughter, Mrs. Nancy Wheat, 63 years of age.  This old gentleman was born near the Red House, in Prince William county, Viriginia, May 10, 1764.  His father resided on a platation near the Potomac, adjoining Lawrence Washington's.... He and his brothers were in the war of 1812...  He was married in Virginia soon after attaining his majority, and raised a family of ten boys and five girls.  Leaving his native State some years after the war, he settled in Roan county, Tennessee.  From that place he moved to Lauderdale county, Alabama, thence to White county, Arkansas, and in 1848 came to Dallas county, Texas, in his 84th year.  He continued his residence there until 1872 when in the 108th year he selected, as he says, Parker county to spend his old days in.

    Bridgeton boasts of a negro inhabitant named Jeremiah Welles, who is 102 years old.  He was born in 1776, in the old tavern kitchen at Cantwell's Bridge on the Appoquiminink Creek, in St. George's Hundreds, New Castle county, Del., and when a mere babe was sold as a slave by his father to the proprietor of its tavern.

    Simon Conger, an aged and eccentric man, who for many years past has lived in a small shanty in Metuchen, with an old dog as his only companion, met with an accident a few days ago which severely bruised one of his toes.  In the absence of proper care the bruised toe did not heal rapidly enough and the old man, in a fit of impatience, took a hammer and chisel and cut off the member, hoping thereby to obtain relief from the pain which he suffered.  This foolish act caused mortification to set in and on Friday night the old man died.

    Hackensack is in commotion over the sudden marriage of Miss Sarah Herring, daughter of Hackensack's wealthy Sheriff, to Chas. Fournyer, a coachman in the employ of her father.... Fournyer is about twenty-one years of age, a native of France and is said to be a clever, respectable young man.

    The 100th birthday anniversary of Jas. McCloughan, who resides with his son (David McCloughan, Esq.) near Hamden, was celebrated on Tuesday, by a surprise party of friends and neighbors.

    We greatly regret to learn of the death of a daughter of A. T. Williamson, living near Ringoes, which occurred at Charlottesville, Va., where she was visiting friends.  The Jeffersonian of that town gives the following account of her brief sickness and death:
    A Sad Death
        Our whole community was shocked on last Saturday morning at the announcement of the death of Miss Ellen Williamson, who died, at the residence of her uncle, Capt. T. L. Farish, the evening before at 7 o'clock.... She was a native of New Jersey, where her parents now reside, but had been spending the winter with her relatives here, and had endeared herself to many in our community by her lovely character...   The remains were interred in the family burying ground, on the "Farm", on Sunday evening, with the solemn and impressive service of the Episcopal Church in the presence of a large number of sympathizing friends.
 

Drowned In An Inch Of Water
    The County Physician was called to investigate a singular case of death in Middlesex county, N.J., last Wednesday.  A young man named Fletcher, about 28 years of age, was seated with two little children on the bank of a brook called Mile Run, on the outskirts of New Brunswick, whittling out boats for them with a pen-knife.  He was seized with a fit and fell upon his face in the water.

    In Richmond, Ind., last winter, a wretch named Charles Maul seduced his sister-in-law and two servant girls, who were attending his wife during a confinement.  His wife was made insane on learning of the crime of her husband, who fled to avoid vengenance from his brother-in-law.  Recently, Maul returned, and on the morning of the 18th, he was met by the Stevenson boys, who shot him, three balls entering his body, causing fatal wounds.

    Reuben Kugler, a prominent citizen of Kingwood township, was buried on Thursday last.  He owned the mills at Milltown.

    Peter F. Opdycke, of Kingwood township, died week before last after a short illness, of congestion of the brain.  He was secretary of the New Jersey Live Stock Insurance Company, and was a man well known throughout the county.

    April 16, 1878, at Tarrytown, N.Y., Mrs. Mary W. George, widow of Mr. Charles George, for many years deacon of the First Baptist Church in this city.  She was born May 3, 1793 and with her afterwards husband was baptized in 1817 by Rev. Dr. Holcombe, in the Schuylkill River.  We take the above from the National Baptist, Philadelphia, of a recent date.  Mrs. George will be remembered by many of the older residents of Flemington, as the widow of Charles George, the founder of the old Hunterdon Gazette, March 24th, 1825.

    John Morrisey, the famous pugilist and politician, died rather suddenly at Saratoga, on Wednesday night.

    Rev. John Vanderveer, identified for a long time with the industrial interests of Easton, died on Monday, in the 78th year of his age...

    Ryan Van Mater, farmer, living near Tinton Falls, N.J., hung himself in his barn Sunday afternoon by ascending a ladder and swinging himself off, with the use of some plough-lines, from one of the mow-poles.

    The Plainfield Constitutionalist of May 3 says:  A useful lesson for us all may be drawn from the sad death of Patrick Geary, in New Brooklyn, on Tuesday morning last.  He neglected attending to a slight wound in the right foot caused by stepping upon a sharp piece of broken glass about ten days ago, and last Thursday week was taken with lockjaw, with all its attending agony.  After an illness of five days he died.

    Charles Hays, of Dover, was to have been married on Saturday last, but was killed by the caving in of a portion of the Byram mine the Tuesday previous.

    Mary J. Murtha, aged twelve years, of No. 144 Morris street, Jersey City, was fatally burned, on Wednesday, by the explosion of an oil can, while she was pouring oil on a fire.

    The written confession of Joel Clow, who was hanged in Mount Holly in 1833 for the murder of Mrs. Hamilton in Bordentown, was recently found in a trunk in Wilmington, Delaware.

    Robert K. Adams, of Sparta, Sussex County, was killed on Tuesday last, in the grist mill of James L. Decker, at that place.  While the mill was undergoing repairs, he went to the lower part, where his arm was caught in the wheel and his body drawn in so as stop its motion.  He was killed instantly.  During the Rebellion, he was Commissary Sergeant in the First Regiment of New Jersey Cavalry.
 

    Miss Sarah Stewart, a noted belle, a great-granddaughter of Patrick Henry and cousin of Senator Withers, was visiting the principal of Clifton Academy, on Lambert Point road Va., and Tuesday morning about breakfast time the servant gave the alarm that Miss Stewart was lying on the floor of her room in a swoon.  She was dead.  Her pocketbook, which was know to have contained $75 or $100, was lying near by, empty.  A diamond ring, recently presented to her, was gone, and her gold watch and other jewelry, valued at $1000, was missing.  Three tramp women were seen around the house about daylight.  She was to have been married in September.

Burned To Death
    A sad occurrence took place at White House Station last Wednesday night.  About nine o'clock flames were seen in the upper windows of a two story dwelling occupied by George Hall, about one hundred and fifty yards south of the depot.  Hall had just left the house about ten minutes when the fire broke out, and was within fifty yards of his house.  He had left his three children in the house.  A boy age four and a girl aged five years had just been put to bed.  Another girl, aged seven, was the only person in the house who escaped without injury.  The other two were burned to death, the heat being so intense that it was utterly impossible to render them any aid.  Hall is a laboring man and works by the day.  His wife had gone to Plainfield in the afternoon and returned home on the twenty minutes past ten o'clock train and found their home burned to the ground and her two children lay burning in the ruins.

Death of a Murderess
    A Hartford dispatch says: Lydia Sherman, the Derby murderess, died at Wethersfield State Prison last Wednesday, having been in failing health for several weeks.  She was arrested at New Brunswick, N.J., in June 1871, for the murder of her husband, H. N. Sherman, of Derby, Conn., and was tried at New Haven, in March, 1872, the result being a verdict of murder in the second degree.  At the close of the trial she was remanded to jail at New Haven for sentence.  Ten months later, in January 1878, she made a full confession, showing that she had poisoned three husbands and four children.  Her victims were E. S. Struck, a Yorkville policeman, and two children by her marriage with him; Dennis Hurlburt, of Litchfield, Conn., and H. N. Sherman and his two children, Ada and Frankie Sherman....  She was born at New Brunswick, N.J., and was 53 years old.

A Bride Burned To Death
    Mrs. Abraham J. Cole, who was married four days ago, while polishing the stove in her rooms at Greenpoint, on Saturday, placed a can of liquid polish on the back part of the range.  The can exploded and the contents were thrown over her dress.  Her brother responded to her cries for assistance.  Before he could throw a table cover over, his clothing caught fire, and stifled by the gases emitted by the burning liquid and the smoke, he fell senseless to the floor.  Attracted by the screams, Daniel Moore, who owns the building, entered and placed his overcoat over the prostrate form of the woman.  She was then removed insensible, to her bed, and lingered in great agony until she died.

    Miss Catharine Esther Beecher, sister of Henry Ward Beecher, died at Elmira on Sunday, aged 78 years.  She was the eldest child of Dr. Lyman Beecher, and when very young was betrothed to Professor Fisher of Yale.  He was drowned at sea, and she never married....  She was an earnest advocate of the right of women to vote.   She had been a strong partisan of her brother, Henry Ward, in all his troubles.

    Hon. James K. Swayze, one of the most prominent and respected citizens of Warren county, died at his residence in the village of Hope, last Wednesday, aged 68 years, of neuralgia of the heart.

    Michael Dolan, aged 12, of Jersey City, went on a frolic on Sunday with some other boys of about his own age.  He ate two cents' worth of dates and drank twelve bottles of birch beer.  In returning home in the evening he was seized with violent cramps.  A physician was sent for on Monday morning, but the boy died before he arrived.

George Grant
    George Grant, who died on his great stock farm in Ellis County, Kan., last Friday, was a Scotchman.  Having acquired a large fortune as a silk merchant in London, he conceived the plan of planting an English colony in this country.  His first purchase was a tract of land containing 69,120 acres, to which he gave the name Victoria.  To this tract, he afterward added a large number of acres....

    John Sutherland, an employee of the Singer Sewing Machine Company at Elizabeth, several years ago obtained a divorce from his wife.  A month ago he unexpectedly met his divorced wife in Brooklyn and after several interviews they were re-married in Elizabeth last week.

    Isaiah N. Dilts, Esq., a prominent lawyer, and for the past twenty-five years a citizen of Somerville, died at his residence in that place on Tuesday last, of consumption.

    Silas Fretz, a son-in-law of Richard T. Johnson, of Frenchtown, met with a serious accident at his residence at South Haven, Michigan, on Monday, 13th inst.  While engaged at work in a saw mill he fell upon the saw and his arm and leg was severed from his body.  On Monday last a telegram was received by Mr. Johnson announcing his death.

    Mrs. Mary M., the wife of Rev. Dr. A. D. Baldwin, pastor of the Presbyterian Church, Bound Brook, died on Wednesday at the parsonage.

    Mrs. Margaret O'Brien, aged 30 years, was found dead in her bed, on Fairmount avenue, Jersey City, on Sunday morning.  Alcholism is said to have been the cause.

    A Paterson boy named John Davidson, about ten years old, while playing base ball with some other lads on Tuesday, was struck on the head with a bat.  He fell senseless and was taken home where he gradually sank and died on Wednesday morning.
 

Local Department

    A. H. Pickell, Esq., was taken seriously ill on Friday, 24th ult., and died on the following afternoon....
 

    Joseph Thomas, of Changewater mountain, died on Tuesday at the advanced age of 93 years.  He was one of the very early settlers of that part of Hunterdon county, of whom very few are left.

    On Saturday afternoon, 25th inst., Ambrose Barcroft, a farmer residing at Kingwood, in Kingwood township, started from his home to go to Rush Island fishery for the purpose of bringing his hired man home.  When he had driven about three hundren yards from his home, in front of the Kingwood hotel, he met some of his neighbors, with whom he conversed a few minutes, when they observed his head to fall.  They carried him into the hotel but life was extinct.  In 1860-61, he was a member of the Assembly from this county.  He was about 60 years old.  It is supposed that his death was caused by apoplexy.

    In December last, Benjamin Everitt, of West Amwell, was wounded in the orbit of the eye, he having been struck on the nasal side of the orbit by the horn of on e of his cows.  It was thought that he had recovered from the wound long since, but about two weeks ago he again commenced to complain, and on Tuesday last he died.  The wound had affected the brain so as to cause paralysis.

The Sourland Mountain Murder
    Peter Nixon (colored), the victim of Benjamin Peterson's jealous revenge, died on Monday afternoon last from the effects of the wound received from the latter in the early morning of May 30th.

    William Cullen Bryant, well-known throughout the country as a poet, journalist and prominent citizen, died in New York, last Wednesday.  He was in the 84th year of his age, and was enjoying remarkably good health, until about two weeks ago, since when he has been gradually failing.

A Wife's Terrible Crime
    This town was thrown into a terrible excitement to-day over a domestic tragedy of almost unparalleled atrocity, in which Jennie Miller beheaded her husband, Anderson Miller, while they were at breakfast....  The Millers had been married about two years.... Killed On The Railroad
    Last Saturday afternoon, Mrs. Mary Crotchley, a widow lady residing near Hackettstown, was killed on the railroad in Larries' cut, but a short distance from the depot of this place.... Her lifeless form was taken home to her three children on Sunday morning, and on Monday afternoon the funeral was preached in the M.E. Church.  She was about 57 years of age.  [Hackettstown Gazette]

    At Yagersville, in the town of Wawarsing, near Ellenville, Ulster county, N.Y., on Tuesday morning, Frederick Kimble entered his son Richard's room and attacked the latter's wife with a small axe, inflicting three frightful wounds, which will prove fatal... The murderer was put under guard, and upon examination committed to jail.  The cause of the assault was a settled hatred of the woman.

    The marriage of Mrs. John R. Thompson and ex-Governor Swan, of Maryland, took place at Princeton, last Thursday and was a very fine affair.  The ceremony was performed at the residence of the bride, by Rev. A. B. Baker, asisted by Rev. Robert Dodd, in the presence of a large number of invited friends.

    A few days ago, Lucine Levys, a wealthy Hebrew of New York, married a flower girl, a Christian.  Mrs. Levys went out on Thursday morning and when she returned she found her husband dead in bed.  His limbs were contracted by poison he had taken and his face were a terrible expression.

The Death Of Dr. Hodge
    A gloom was cast over the festivities of the Princeton College Commencement by the announcement of the death of Dr. Charles Hodge, who, for the past fifty years, has occupied the chair of the senior professor in the Thelogical Seminary.
    Dr. Hodge was a native of Philadelphia, and a son of the celebrated physician, Dr. Hugh Hodge....  He died on Wednesday evening, in the 81st year of his age, and was buried on Saturday.

    William Chamberlain, of this place, was buried in the Baptist grave-yard on Monday last.  Mr. Chamberlain had been a sufferer for many years - a sufferer to a greater degree then often fails to the lot of man.  He was a carpenter by trade, and some twenty years ago while he and William B. Swallow were making repairs to the County Hotel building, the scaffold upon which they stood gave way, precipitating both men to the ground.  Both men were hurt, but Mr. Chamberlain the most severely, one of his legs being badly broken and sustaining other injuries from which he never fully recovered...

    Benjamin Carter, living near Barnsboro, died suddenly on the 12th inst.  He started to run to his house from protection from a shower of rain, when he fell on his face and died on the spot.  Asa Roberts, a worthy citizen of Mullica Hill, died on the same date from a paralytic stroke.

    Christopher H. Callan, a Newark widower, and Mrs. Francis Graham, who resided with her husband in the same city, disappeared on Monday last week, and on Saturday Callan and Mrs. Graham were seen on board a steamship in New York, apparently, going to England, Callan's native country.  Mrs. Graham, who has four children, the oldest thirteen years and the youngest six months, took three of her children with her.

    A widow lady named Hannah Reed, aged 45 years, and well known in Burlington county, committed suicide on Broad street in Burlington, on Saturday night, by taking crude arsenic, or i
