    A Newark Tragedy
        A murder was perpetrated in Newark late on Thursday night last.  It was in a saloon at 67
Jackson street, kept by John Murphy, who with his wife lived in the building.  Mrs. Murphy's
mother Mrs. Mary Ann Kane, aged about forty-five years, was visiting the family of her
son-in-law on New Year's Day and had remained at the house, intending to return to the home
of her own parents in River street on Wednesday last.... Murphy ... began to quarrel with his
wife.  They final engaged in a scuffle, and Murphy struck her one blow.  Mrs. Kane stood by,
taking no part in the fight, but Murphy, after knocking his wife down, turned with great
ferocity upon his mother-in-law.  He struck her with an iron stove-lifter...  Murphy repeated his
deadly blows with the iron, and crushed in her skull and face.... Murphy fled.

    Job Baldwin died at his residence near Whippany, Morris county, last week, at the advance
age of 90 years, eleven months and sixteen days... His ancestors have been traced back to the
landing of the Pilgrim Fathers at Plymouth, afterward exiled with Roger Williams to Rhode
Island...

    Mr. John Hagemen, a well known resident of New Brunswick, dropped dead in his dining
room on Thursday morning.  He was nearly 70 years old, never married and leave a fortune
estimated at $300,000...

    At Moravia, N.Y., on Sunday, John Hillsman shot his wife and Wm. J. N. Sheppard, killing
both instantly and then committed suicide by shooting himself.... Sheppard leaves a wife and
three daughters....

    At Washington, on Wednesday afternoon, while Edward Farrow, an old soldier at the
Soldiers' Home, was herding cattle, he was gored in the neck by a bull, and so badly injured -
the larynx, being didied - that he died in a few hours.
 

Local Affairs

    Sudden Death
        On Sunday, the 5th inst., Mrs. John Lair, of Kingwood township, stepped out of the house
and soon after was heard to utter an unusual sound.  The family came to her assistance, but
before they could realize what was going on, she expired.  She was a daughter of Mr. Edmund
P. Hann, and had been married but a few months.

    Suicide
        The citizens of Everittstown were startled on the morning of the 30th ult., by the
announcement that Mr. Nathaniel Rittenhouse, a resident of that place, was dead.  Upon
investigation it was found that he had committed suicide by shooting himself ... His age was
about 75 years.

    Sad Fatality
        On Wednesday morning last a child of Mr. Amos Grooms, of Lambertsville, while playing
round the stove was so badly burned that it died in a few hours thereafter.  The child was about
eighteen months old.

    A New York Tragedy
        Clarence Lockwood, a printer, was mortally shot on last Monday evening by Marshall
McGruder, in the house 144 Madison street, where both boarded...

    Sudden Death
        On Monday evening last, John Depoldt, aged about 80 years, died very suddenly at Three
Bridges.  He was in the employ of John J. Van Fleet, cabinet maker at that place, and not
coming in to tea as usual, some one went to ascertain the cause, when he was found lying with
his head under the bench on which he had been working, dead.... He was buried at
Readington.

    Death of the Last Slave
        Isaac Miller, or better known as "Old Ike", of Green Village, Morris County, died in
Madison a few days ago, at the advanced age of 86.  He was the slave of Samuel Roberts, Sen.,
who died several years ago, and he belonged to that small class whom the State of New Jersey
refused to liberate on account of their age when it abolished slavery....

    Sudden Death - The Lambertville Beacon says:
        On Tuesday morning last, about seven o'clock, Mrs. Mary Ely, mother-in-law of Mr. Smith
Huselton, was found dead in bed.... She was about 64 years of age.

    Last Sunday evening a little daughter of Mr. George Tippenhauer, a resident of Moorestown,
was so badly burned by the explosion of a coal oil lamp which she was carrying at the time, that
she died within a few hours.

    John Flanders, a farmer residing near Brocton, N.Y., was murdered Sunday morning by a
German tramp named Dietzel, who called at his house and asked for breakfast.... Flanders was
sixty-five years old, had a grown-up family, and was generally respected by the community.
 

Local Affairs

    Little May Ramsey, an account of whose fearful burning was given in our last, died from the
effects of her injuries on Monday night.

    Death of Philadelphia Merchant
        Mr. Robert J. Riddell, who a few years since was a very prominent citizen of the city of
Philadelphia, died at his country residence in Lambertville on Wednesday morning last after
quite a short illness, being forty-six years of age.
 

State Notes

    Charles Henry Martin, of Piscataway, died very suddenly on Wednesday.  He had been out
with his father and on his return, while sitting on a chair he fell forward and expired.
Deceased was about 20 years old.

    An old woman, known in New Brunswick by the name of "Crazy Mary", was found frozen to
death in her room, on Friday.  Deceased was the widow of a Union soldier, and drew a pension
regularly.

    On the 29th ult., two children, a boy and a girl, of Thomas Johnson, of Bushtown, Salem
county, while the family were at church, drew some live coals from the stove, setting the little
girls clothing on fire.  The boy tried to smother the flames, but did not succeed until the little
girl was so badly burned that she died the next day.

the county, died at his residence on Wednesday last.

    Fatal Case of Scalding
        On Thursday morning last, a three year old child of Mr. George Gethard, of Mettler's Mills,
was so severely burned by falling into a pail of hot water that it died the following morning.

the neck, dead, in the loft of a frame building adjoining the paper mill of the Lambertville Paper
Manufacturing Co..... He was between fifty and sixty years of age..
 

Local Affairs

    Attempted  Suicide
        On Monday morning last, Mr. John Salter, near Rosemont, an old man of 83 years,
attempted to commit suicide by cutting his throat with a shoemaker's knife. ...  He died on
Saturday form the effects of his injuries.

    By the Warren Democrat we notice the death of Adam D. Runkle, which occurred at the
residence of his son-in-law, Edward F. Stewart, Esq., in Easton, Pa., on the 14th inst.  Deceased
was born near Asbury, December 20th, 1789, and was consequently in the eighty-fourth year
of his age at the time of his death....

    Mr. Ralph Priestly, a soldier of the war of 1812, fell dead in the street in Elizabeth on
Thursday last.  He was 82 years of age, and a native of New Brunswick.
 

Local Affairs

    Rev. Joseph J. Sleeper died February 27th, 1873, in Burlington county.  He was pastor of
the M.E. Church at Everittstown, about 18 years ago.  About 12 years ago he was elected
Secretary of the Senate of this State and filled the position one year.  He was 81 years of age.

    Sudden Death
        William Moore, a well known and highly respected citizen of Head Quarters, Delaware
township, fell dead in the road near his dwelling on Friday morning last.

    Quite as sudden and unexpected was the death of Henry Shurts, which occurred at his
residence in Readington township, last Saturday evening.  Mr. Shurts was a good citizen, and
had a wide circle of friends and acquaintances.   He was well advanced in years.

    At Mattoon, Illinois, Mrs. Nancy Laxton, a widow, and her adopted daughter, aged 12 years,
were found dead in bed, On Thursday morning last, with their throats cuts....  A son of Mrs.
Laxton has been arrested on suspicion of having committed the murder.

    Hon. E. G. Kilbourn a prominent politician and a highly esteemed citizen, died Friday at this
residence in Anne Arundel county, Md.  He was a lawyer by profession and was Speaker of the
House of Delegates in 1860 and presided at the famous extra session held at Frederick City in
1861, when a number of the member were arrested.  The deceased was a native of New
England.

    Three small children, a son and daughter of Henry Pende and a son of Charles Blake, were
drowned at Orone, near Bangor, Me., on Thursday, by breaking through the ice while at play.

    Herbert Hahaney, aged 13 years, employed at 233 State street, was killed on Thursday
afternoon in Boston, by falling through an elevator opening seventy-five feet.

    Alois Peters, aged forty-five years, residing at Philadelphia, committed suicide Sunday
morning last by cutting his throat.  His wife was at church at the time...
 

State News

    Ann Price a harmless lunatic, who has been in the habit of wandering about the streets of
Jersey City unmolested, was instantly killed last week by a locomotive, on the Newark and New
York Railroad.

    On Sunday week Mrs. Hester Shaw, residing in Lumberton, Burlington county, died in that
place, at the advanced age of 104 years.

    Mr. Ralph Briestly, a soldier of 1812 who went to draw his pension last week, fell down in a
fit in Elizabeth and died in a few minutes.  Mr. Briestly was 81 years of age and was a
well-known and highly respected citizen of New Brunswick, where he had held several
honorable positions.

Poulson, in the 63d year of his age.

    On the 16th inst., William R. Stevenson, son of Thomas C. and Jane Stevenson, of Newark,
N.J., aged 18 years, 5 months and 23 days.

    At the residence of George W. Cook, in Stanton, March 17th, Oliver H. Ewing, in the 29th
year of his age.

    In Flemington, March 5th, 1873, Maggie Pyatt, in the 25th year of her age.  Peculiarly heavy
seems the blow which removed this daughter and sister from the circle of her love, since it is
but little more than a year that a similar bereavement fell upon the home.  Mary and Maggie
were twin sisters, beloved in the family, the community, the Church.  On both the same
disease early fastened; both solowly wasted; both bore with christian patience ...
 

    At Syracuse, N.Y., on Monday, Albert Keeler, aged 21, killed Ida Spencer, aged 14.  The
murderer was first cousin to the girl.  He lived in Canada and was visiting his uncle, the girl's
father...

    Death of a Centenarian
        Mary Moneghan, a native of Galway county, Ireland, died on March 22 at her residence in
New York, having reached the age of 102.  She came to this country thirty-five years ago, and
not only supported herself, but provided means to pay for the passages of eleven nieces and
nephews to this country....

    The death of Rear Admiral John B. Montgomery, at Carlisle, Pa., on the 25th, is announced
by the Navy Department.  Deceased was born in New Jersey, and entered the navy in 1812....
His remains will be interred at Washington.

    Mrs. Housden, a widow, aged sixty, living nine miles south of Nashville, Tenn., was taken
from her bed on Monday night by unknown persons, carried to the common gallows erected for
dressing hogs, and hanged till she was dead...

    Captain John Whalen, of Elizabeth, died at his residence in that city on Thursday night.
Deceased was one of the first to volunteer from New Jersey on the breaking out of the
rebellion.  Upon his return home he took an active part in the politics of Union county, being
twice elected to the Assembly on the Democratic ticket.  At the time of his death he was acting
as Street Commissioner of Elizabeth.
 

Local Affairs

    Fatal Runaway Accident.
        On Wednesday morning last, Mr. Samuel R. Reading, of Delaware Township, was seated
with Mr. Samuel Hartpence, the Rosemont undertaker, on a hearse, and were on their way to
attend a funeral at Locktown.  While going along, the young and spirited team they were
driving took fright from the breaking of a spring of the vehicle and ran away, and coming in
contact with a snow bank, both men were thrown from the hearse...  Mr. Hartpence escaped
with a few bruises, but Mr. Reading, besides other injuries sustained a fracture of the skull,
from the effects of which he died on Thursday morning....

    Rev. John R. Willox
        John R. Willox was born in the month of October 1810.  His birth-place was not far from
Aberdeen, in Scotland... In the year 1836 he came to this country and by some means found
his way to German Valley, where he was employed in teaching...
 
 

Apr. 8, 1873, Vol. XXXV, No. 33 Whole No. 1864

    While John Langly was being lowered into the Borden mine, in Allegheny county, Md.,
Monday morning, with a horse and cart, the horse, becoming restive, kicked the coupling loose,
and all were precipitated to the bottom, a distance of 165 feet.  Langly was instantly killed.

    Robert Stuart and Emma Kinley were drowned in a creek near Camden, Sunday night.  They
were crossing a wire footbridge when the swaying of the bridge caused Miss Kinley to trip.  To
save herself, she seized hold of Stuart, and both were prcipitated into the water and drowned.

    John and Michael Kane, brothers, quarrelled in Washington on the 26 ult., and Michael
stabbed John with a butcher knife.  The wounded man died on Friday night.
 

Local Affairs

    The sudden death of John Moore, a colored citizen of this place, which occurred on Sunday
evening last, occasioned a general feeling of regret throughout the village ...  He was sick but a
few days.
 

    Death of Capt. John H. Whelan.
        On Friday morning, March 21st, at his home in Elizabeth, after an illness of about two
weeks, died Captain John H. Whelan, a citizen of that place, but who was pretty well known
throughout the State.  The Captain was a native of Ireland...  He served with distinction in the
volunteer service during the late war, and we need not say was no feather-bed soldier but a
warrior fit to fight under the banner of Brian of Clontorf....

    San Francisco despatches report that on March 11th, Gus. Ewain, John McDonald and
George Taylor were murdered by a large band of Apaches.  The savages were overtaken by
troops, under command of Lieutenant Rice, and in the conflict which followed 79 warriors were
killed and 26 women and children captured.  Taylor, one of the murdered men, was subjected
to most brutal torture.

    A Terrible Death
        On Wednesday morning the inhabitants of the quiet village of Hartford were startled with
the report that Martin McHugh and his wife had been found drowned in a cistern, and it was
not long before the entire population of the place rushed to the scene of the accident....

State News

    Hiram Mills, a soldier who fought at Waterloo, died at his residence in Jersey City, on
Sunday.  During the late war he was in the Union army, and accompanied General Sherman's
army through Georgia.

    Peter Schelp, a native of Germany, living at Bloomfield, Essex county, dropped suddenly
dead, while playing at billiards on Monday night.  He was 22 years of age and of temperate and
industrious habits, and his death is supposed, to have been caused by heart disease.

    Joseph Cassidy, a laborer, died in Jersey City on Sunday, having been bitten by a dog six
weeks ago.... His son was bitten by the same animal, and died in agony about a fortnight ago.
Cassidy was buried yesterday.

    Outage and Murder
        A Pittsburg, Pa., dispatch, dated Tuesday last, says: "Monday morning Saltsburg, Pa., was
the scene of probably one of the most fiendish murders that has ever occurred in this State.
The victim is Lizzie Kline, an adopted daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Kline, and was fourteen years of
age.  Her father's name is Mess, and he resides in Ohio, but her mother is dead....

    Hon. James Brooks, Representative in Congress from the Eighth New York District, died
Wednesday evening last, in the 63d year of his age.

    A Jersey Sailor Cuts Loose His Main Cable
        In New Haven on Wednesday last a man named Charles C. Brown, while in the barroom
connected with a sailor's boarding house, kept by Daniel Gunn, on the corner of Warren and
West Water streets, shot himself in the head with a pistol and died immediately..... He is
supposed to have belonged to Elizabethport, N.J.

    William C. Vyze, a lad fifteen years of age, was accidently poisoned by his father in Newark,
on Wednesday night, who got up to give the boy medicine and by mistake got hold of a bottle
containing corosive sublimate.  A physican was called as soon as the mistake was discovered
but the boy died in great agony.

    A man named Johnson died in Jersey City on Thursday from concussion of the brain.
Deceased was in the employ of the gas company, and had been in the cellar of a house to
inspect the metre, and in coming up the stairs he struck his head on a beam, produc
ing injuries which resulted as above stated.

    Sudden Death
        On Sunday week, Elias Rake, an old man residing about two miles west of this village,
dropped dead on the floor of his dwelling.  He was a quiet and peaceable man.  It is supposed
that his death was caused by heart disease.
 

    Boy Killed
        On Saturday, 26th ult., at about half-past eleven A.M., while using one of the derricks at
the quarries of Kessler & Co., at Prallsville, in this county, one of the guy-ropes broke, striking
Martin Fennel (a son of Martin Fennel, who was killed by lightning at the outlet locks some
years age,) and crushing in his skull, from the effects of which he died at 2 P.M.  He was about

    Death of Chief Justice Chase
        Salmon P. Chase, Chief Justice of the United States, died at the residence of his daughter
in New York, Wednesday morning at 10 o'clock.  The health of Judge Chase has been
considerably impaired of late years, but it was not known that a fatal result was apprehended
and the announcement of his death will take the country by surprise.
    The deceased was a native of New Hampshire, having been born at Cornish in January
1808...

    James L. Orr, formerly Representative in Congress from South Carolina, and Speaker of the
House of Representatives, one of the South Carolina Ambassadors to Washington after the
secession in 1860, elected Governor of that State in 1865, and recently appointed, United
States Minister to Russia, died somewhat suddenly in St. Petersburg on Monday last of
inflammation of the lungs....

     A terrible tragedy is reported in Marshall county, Ky.  About a year ago James Dougherty
married a girl named Smith, but they lived unhappily, and finally separated.  Sunday before
last, Howell Smith, the girl's father, told Dougherty that he could settle the difficulty between
him and his wife, whereupon he was instantly shot dead by his son-in-law.  The murderer was
susequently captured and while on the way to jail, a son of the victim, who was one of the
captors, fired upon Dougherty, slightly wounding him.  Young Smith then clubbed his gun and
struck Dougherty in the head with the butt end of it, killing him on the spot.

    Fatal Burning Accident
        A correspondent sends us the following: On Wednesday evening last the shanty occupied
by David Berry and wife, at Junction, was dicovered to be on fire.  The shanty was in two rooms,
one of which was partly filled with straw, used for filling beds.  The fire broke out in this room
and after thestraw was consumed the body of Mrs. Berry was found.... "We find that Mary Berry
came to her death by buring of the house of David Berry, her husband."

    Death of the Rail
        Mrs. Margaret Dowery, an aged Irishwoman, was struck by a locomotive and instantly
killed while attempting to cross the track of the Central Railroad at Hampton Junction, one
afternoon last week.  She was very hard of hearing.
 

    Mrs. Amelia Monks, aged 50 years, a widow, residing on a small farm near Newfoundland,
Morris County, committed suicide on Monday evening by hanging herself in an out-house.  The
body was not found until the next day.

    A man named Carson, living in Lamberton street, Trenton, married and the father of three
children, eloped a day or two since with a young Miss Banks, living near.  He took with him his
youngest child ...

    Two Men Drowned in the Delaware
        On Sunday morning, 18th inst., an accident occurred near Uhlersville by which two men,
named respectively Charles Hartman and Peter Pierson, lost their lives....  Hartman leaves a
window, but Pierson, a native of Sweden, has no relatives in this country.

    A Woman Killed by Her Son
        In Brooklyn Sunday night during an altercation between a young man named Geo.
Roderick and James Corcoran, in which the latter was very abusive and struck the former, each
drew pistols.  Mrs. Roderick, mother of the former, rushed between them and in the struggle to
prevent her son from firing the pistol it went off, the ball passing through her head, causing
instant death....

    On Friday morning last, two little girls, one a daughter of Mr. W. Morgan, the other of Mr.
Wilfring, residing at Shadyside, near Pittsburg, were playing, when one of them applied a
lighted match to the mouth of a can filled with carbon oil. The oil instandly exploded, and both
the children were burned to death.
 

Local Affairs

    Dogs have commenced to worry the sheep.  One night last week they tackled a flock
belonging to Mr. Jonas Sutton, near Sand Brook, and killed and maimed a dozen or more
sheep and lambs.
 

Obituary
    Frank P. Walton, late bookkeeper at Mr. Wm. H. Fulper's store in this place, died at the
residence of his father near Carversville, Pa, on Friday last.  Frank was taken ill with
pleuro-pneumonia about two months ago, which left him in a very weak state....
 

    A Young girl named Elizabeth Arnold was strangled to death on Monday in Pekin, Ill.  She
was climbing out of a window, when the sash fell, pinioning her by the neck in such a manner
that death ensued before she could be extracted.

    Sad Accident
        The Easton "Argus" contains the following: " On Friday afternoon last, a three-year old boy
of Mr. Jonathan Fly, residing in Palmer township, had a small piece of china, with which he
was playing, to lodge in his throat at the opening of the wind pipe.  Mr. Fly as soon as he
discovered what ailed the child, brought it to Easton, in order to have the china taken out.  The
unfortunate little one was carried to Dr. Mixsell's office, and several physicians were called to
relieve it, but death came before the china could be removed..

    Found Dead
        Mr. David Alpaugh, a man about forty years of age, was found dead in his barn near
Potterstown, on Wednesday afternoon last.  He had been fishing the night before in company
with some neighbors, and returned about 7 o'clock in the morning, when he laid down in the
barn to sleep.  He was discovered about 4 o'clock.  (Casket)

    Evident Murder - The Family Casket is responsible for the following:
        Some time last Fall, the wife of Andrew Sheets - who did not live on very peaceable terms
with her husband- suddenly disappeared from their home near High Bridge the husband
reporting that she had gone off with a certain colored man; but facts proved that she had not
been away at all....  to their horror and surprise discovered the bones and hair of a woman,
which a neighbor women is willing to testify is the hair of Mrs. Sheets....

    Murder and Suicide - A Raleigh, N.C., dispatch to the N.Y. Times says:
        On Saturday morning last, in Yadkin county, occurred one of the coolest and most
determined murders and suicides ever committed in this State.  John Holcombe and
his wife, Julia, who had been married about a year, were the subjects.  Julia possessed
uncommon beauty and was suspected of infidelity to her marriage vows.  She was on the eve of
leaving home to visit Salisbury and Charlotte.  Holcombe having endeavored to dissuade her
from leaving, without success, decided to murder her and commit suicide....
 

Local Affairs

    Mr. John L. Van Fleet, well-known to most of the citizens of this county, died at his
residence in this place on Tuesday last, after a protracted and very painful illness.  Mr. Van
Fleet had been engaged in the restaurant business in this place for the past ten or twelve
years and was a very popular man.

    Sudden Death
        Mr. Jacob H. Holcombe, an old resident of this place, died rather suddenly on Saturday
last. In the morning he started out for Lebanon to visit his son-in-law, and soon after arriving
there he was taken with a fit of epilepsy and died about 4 o'clock in the afternoon.  He was
upwards of 80 years old.

    Horrible Tragedy in Maine.
        At daybreak on Monday morning last, Almond Gordon, a farmer living near Thorndike
stations, in Maine, and his wife and youngest daughter were found murdered in one bed, and
his little son, six years old, who slept in a crib in the same room, fearfully wounded, and the
house set on fire.... A bother of the murdered man is now in custody.
    John Gordon, a man of seventy years of age, had recently conveyed to his son, Almond M.
his farm, worth $5,000 taking back a mortgage for life for the support of himself and wife.  The
other son, John T., was dissatified with the arrangement, and probably thought that by the
death of his brother and family the property would fall to him.... At the time of the murder the
old people were absent on a visit.  The inmates of the house were the murdered man, Almon
M., aged twenty-five; Emma A., his wife, aged twenty-two; their children, Ira B., aged six, a little
girl, aged seventeen months; Anna, a niece, aged nine; John, seven; the brother, and a hired
man....

    Montpelier, Vt., June 16
        A painful drowning accident occurred at 4 o'clock yesterday afternoon, in what is
called "Number Ten", in the town of Calais, a dozen miles from this place... Five people were
drowned, viz: Lafayette Techout and wife, aged about fifty years and a daughter aged about 5
years, the widow of Amass McKnight, aged about 28 years, and Lydia A., daughter of W. E.
Tobey, aged 15 years.

    A young man named Thomas J. Buckman, aged eighteen years, residing at Wenonah,
Gloucester county, on Monday last, went in to bathe in the mill-pond at that place, and in
diving the back of his head struck on the hard bottom. His neck was partially dislocated.  He
lingered until Wednesday when he died.

    A Deserted Husband's Suicide
        James Mattison, aged twenty-one, who hanged himself in his father's yard, 190 Mount
Pleasant avenue, Newark, on Saturday evening last, had been for some time separated from his
wife, who is living in Trenton...  Before executing his purpose he handed the following letter to
his younger brother Willie, with instructions to send it to his wife ....
    About fifteen minutes afterward he was discovered by his brother and Dr. J. V. Mattison, his
father...

    Mangled by a Lightning Stroke
        A young lady named Nora Bitenour, during the thunder storm that came up on Sunday
afternoon, in Kansas City, Mo., while promenading in the Exposition grounds, fell dead by a
stroke of lightning.

    Christian Smith, aged 55, who has been six months in the New York Tombs for vagrancy,
died suddenly on Tuesday.
 

Local Affairs:

    Theft of Hardware
        One night last week theives broke into the distillery of Mr. Jonas Sutton, near Sand
Brook, and spirited away twenty odd gallons of high up apple whiskey.
    Some one is evidently trying to worry Mr. Sutton.  He drove into town last Friday night, and
tied his horse in front of Force's Hotel.  When he got ready to go home about 11 o'clock, his
horse and wagon were both gone...

    A most distressing accident took place in the Baker Mine, Morris county, last Tuesday night.
A Cornish miner named John Pollard was engaged in shoveling ore into a bucket at the bottom
of a shaft, several hundred feet in depth, when an ascending bucket struck the end of a plank,
which broke from its position and fell down the shaft from a height of 200 feet, striking poor
Pollard on the back of his head... Pollard's brother stood close by when the accident happened.
The deceased leaves a wife and five children in the old country.

    Barney Lane, well known at Newton, on account of his Fourth of July performances,
committed suicide Wednesday morning...

    Ex-chancellor A. O. Zabriskie, died suddenly in California, on Friday last, of erysipelas.  He
went to California about a month ago in company with Mr. M. F. Knapp, for his health and to
view the wonders of that far off State, and was taken ill last week and died as above stated...

    Two Dreadful Suicides
        A horrible affair has occurred at Roxbury, Delaware county, New York.  A young woman
named Mary Moore has been for some time slightly deranged and her relatives intended soon
to take her to an insane asylum.... Soon after, while the relatives were absent, the young
woman set her clothing on fire and crawled into a bed, also firing the bedding... she died in a
few minutes.
        Another case of suicide by a woman, not less horrible, occurred on the railroad at Glen
Rock, York county, Pa., a few days ago.... The woman was about 30 years of age.

    Awful Explosion
        A terrific giant explosion occurred at Virginia City, Nev., Monday night in a brick
building...  Those known to be killed are: W. Lowe, superintendent Silver Hall Mine; General J.
L. Van Bokelen; J. H. Smith, hardware merchant; W. D. Davis, his salesman; Charles Knox, of
Palmor, Knox and Co., San Francisco; E. Mandel, clerk; Mrs. L. P. Conner, Mrs. E. Dean and
children.  James Devine - killed by iron shutter blown across street into livery stable.

    A Fatal Duel
        A New Orleans dispatch, dated July 1, says: A private dispatch form Bay St. Louis states
that a duel was fought near Montgomery Station, this morning, between ex-Judge William H.
Cooley and R.B. Rhett, Jr., of the Picayune, in which Cooley was killed at the second shot....

    Hiram Powers, the American sculptor died in Florence, Italy, June 27, after a lingering
illness.  He was born in Woodstock, Vt., in 1806....

    A Long Island Murder
        On Saturday morning the body of Samuel Jones, a wealthy farmer of Queens county, N.Y.,
about 70 years of age was found in the well in rear of his house....

    Mrs. Lyster, aged ninety-one, was buried at Graysville, Ind., week before last, in the wedding
garments which she wore seventy-three years ago.

    Death of the President's Father
        Jesse R. Grant, the father of President Grant, died at his residence, in Covington,
Kentucky, on Sunday evening last, in the 80th year of this age.... He was born in
Westmoreland county, Pa. on the 12th of January 1794.  He had five children, four of whom -
two sons and two daughters - survive him.

    David Blacklock, aged 40, a well-to-do farmer, living several miles from Baltimore on the
Harford road, was found dead in bed last Friday night from the effects of laudanum, which he is
supposed to have taken with the intention of committing suicide.  A few hours afterwards a
sister of deceased went into the room in which he died and committed suicide by hanging
herself to a bed post.
 

Local Affairs:

    Sad Death - The White House Casket says;
        The sudden and unexpected death of David Park has cast a gloom over the people of this
neighborhood.  He left home on the afternoon of the 19th ult., to sell lumber in Newark.  Not
returning on Saturday evening, the family began to feel uneasy.  On the Monday following a
search was begun, which resulted in finding his body, on the morning of the 25th in the
Passaic river.... He was about 51 years, and leaves family to mourn his sad fate.
 

State Notes:

    A child of Benjamin Perry, of Anderson, Warren county, died on day last week from eating
some poisonous berries growing in the woods near his father's house.

    Peter Gandy, of Millville, with his wife and some friends on Saturday went down the river in a
small sail boat on a pleasure excursion.  On their return Mrs. Gandy was knocked overboard by
the boom.  The husband jumped to her rescue, when a struggle ensured, and before assistance
could reach them Mr. Gandy was drowned.  The wife was finally rescued.

    John C. Ridgeway, Jr., of Burlington county, was found dead in the road on Saturday week,
with a pile of grain bags upon him.  He started for mill the night before and is supposed was
thrown out by accident and smothered to death.

    Singular Death of a Clergyman
        On Saturday afternoon last, during the terrible storm that prevailed, the Rev. Edward
Synder, who lives near Millport, this county, was struck and killed by lightning.... (Mauch

    Tragic End of an Elopement
        The story of John Elliot and Margaret Rollinston, who were carried over Niagara Falls last
week in a small boat, has about it many of the elements of a romance.  He was nineteen years
of age and his true name was John Emmerson.  The name of Elliot he assumed to avoid
pursuit.  His father lives about six miles east of Cleveland.  Miss Rollinston's parents about a
year since moved from Canada to the same neighborhood and were employed upon a farm....

    Sad Fatality
        A young man named William Gess met with a terrible death near Middle Valley on the
26th ult., by a team running away while hauling lumber.... He lived but a few hours after being
taken from the wagon.

    The young ladies, teachers in the Sabbath School of the First Presbyterian Church, at
Belvidere, were entertaining several young girls, members of their classes, by a picnic at the
base od a high hill near the Delaware river, on Tuesday, when from some unknown cause a
stone came bounding down the hill, several hundred feet, striking Carrie Bunderman, age 15
years, causing instant death.

    Murder in Jersey City
        John Stevenson, a U.S. Deputy Marshal, was brutally murdered in Jersey City on Friday
last by a Russian sailor named, Pritt, who had deserted his ship and whom the Marshal was
attempting to arrest....

    Died, Aged 122 Years
        On Sunday Aunt Hager, a colored woman, died in the country near Alexandria.  She was
probably the oldest person in the United States, being 122 years old, having been born on the
21st of March 1751.  She was native of Virgina, and was brought to Kentucky at an early day of
its settlement by Lewis Wilcoxen, whose wife was a sister of Ben Beall the elder, grandfather of
Ben Beall, the present Circuit Clerk of Campbell county.
 

State Notes:

    Mrs. Rambo and her son, aged about 9 years, were drowned on Monday afternoon, in a
branch of the Rancocas creek, near Vincentown.... Mrs. Rambo resided at Pemberton, but was
at Vincentown on a visit to her brother.

    Shocking Affair
        A frightful murder occurred in a hay field in Linden township, Union county, Monday.
The murderer and the victim were employed on the farm of Nash Noe, on what is known as the
Forty-acre road, about half way between the Pennsylvania Railroad and St. George's avenue,
the main thoroughfare between Rahway and Elizabeth.  The men, Michael Kearen, alias Doran,
and Isaac Logan, the latter of whom was stabbed twice by the former with a pitchfork and then
tramped on and beaten.... His (Kearen) antecedents are unknown, but he is thirty years of age,
says he is unmarried and is heavily built and short.  Isaac Logan came brom Brook- was a
widower, and has three children residing in Middletown, Orange county, N.Y....

    A Woman Murdered
        A terrible outrage, ending in murder was committed near Excelsior Grove, Hudson county,
N.J., on Sunday last, the facts of which came to light on Friday.  On the evening of that day a
woman named Delia Cockran, who has been employed for some time past as a cook by Mr. B.L.
Davis, proprietor of Excelsior Grove, ...She was about thirty years of age ...
 

Local Affairs:

    Tuesday morning a young man named Harry Waterbury, aged 19 years, a resident of New
Haven, Conn., but lately on a visit to some relatives at Reiglesville, where his father, N.
Waterbury, formerly kept store, took the 10:30 train on the Belvider Delaware road, on his way
to Phillipsburg...  his head came in contact with a telegraph pole, and he was whirled down the
embankment, a distance of twenty-five or thirty feet. When picked up he was still alive but
expired in a short time.

    Suicide
        Miss Elisabeth Dilley, residing near Everittstown, committed suicide by hanging herself in
the garret of Mr. George W. Hoff's  house, on Monday last.  She had lived in the family of the
late Col. Cornelius Hoff for many years and was very highly respected by all who knew her. No
cause is assigned for the rash deed.

    Mr. John N. Roberson, a native and former resident of Kingwood township, died in
Philadelphia on Tuesday last.  He was a brother to Mr. Ogden Roberson, of this place.
 

State Notes:

    Stephen Conkling, a fireman, of Raritan, while on his way to the fire in Somerville on
Monday, was knocked down and run over by the engine and sustained injuries which resulted
in death on Tuesday morning.

    A resident of Camden, Thos. M. Daisy, committed suicide by swallowing poison yesterday....
Deceased was 37 years of age.  A few months ago he buried his wife, the loss of whom greatly
grieved him.  This, together with the loss of his four children within two years, is supposed to
have caused his suicide.

    At M.E. Manse in Junction, on the 19th inst., by the Rev. W. J. Henderson, assisted by Rev.
Henry Bice, James W. Shepherd and Ellen A. Smith, both of this county.

    At Washington, D.C., July 20th, 1873, Nathaniel Wilson, formerly of Flemington, and lately
of New York.

    In Alexandria Township, July 21, 1873, Elizabeth, daughter of the late William Dilly, aged 43
years and 4 months.

    At Philadelphia, July 21st, John N. Roberson, aged 59 years.

    At Three Bridges, July 23d, Rebecca Rowe, wife of Theodore Huff, aged 29 years and 24 days.

    A Horrible Murder
        One of the most shocking murders that ever occurred in this city took place at No. 17
Beacon street last night, when James Birrell was stabbed and almost instantly killed by his
brother, Alexander.... (Newark Advertiser, Wednesday).

    Horrible Murder and Suicide
        About eight o'clock on Wednesday night last Edward Shusternichter, a German worker in
steel, stabbed and killed his wife Mary, at the residence of her step-father, Mr. Herring, No.
606, South Second street, Philadelphia.
    It seemed that the couple had only been married last May...... Beneath a chair, near where
the body of the husband was found, there was discovered a bottle which contained poison - a
portion which the murderer had swallowed, causing his own death..

    William Kenzie's little child, two years age, while playing in a room on the the third floor of
221 Springfield street, Newark, climbed into a chair near the window and pushed against the
shutters.  The shutters being insecurely fastened, suddenly opened and the child was
precipated to the pavement below.  Its skull was crushed.

    Suicide
        The wife of Peter Eick, a farmer residing on the road from New Germantown to
Potterstown, committed suicide on Sunday morning last, by fastening a towel in the fireplace
and then throwing her neck across it.  She was found about 4 o'clock, by her husband, was
cold when found.  She had been partially deranged for some time, and had required
watching...  She leave a husband and children, (we do not know how many) some of whom are
married, ...

    Accident
        At Bloomsbury on Thursday some men were completing an arch for the Easton and Amboy
Railroad, and while placing the arch-key the structure gave way, sending the laborers about
twenty feet to the creek below, killing James Gannon and wounding Arthur McKenna, Thomas
Morgan and - McMinium.
 

State Notes:

    A young man named, Joseph Shield, a resident of Washington, Warren county, was drowned
while bathing in the Lehigh river, a few days ago.

    Michael Martin, aged 25 years was instantly killed on the Packer road, at Bound Brook, on
Saturday morning. The accident was caused by a dirt car jumping the track and resulted in a
general smash of fifteen cars.

    A little three year old child of Henry Croad of Jersey City, fell from a third story window on
Thursday and was impaled on the broken upright of a chair back..

    Elizabeth Smith, of Newark, was fatally burned on Thursday afternoon.  She attempted to
kindle a fire by pouring keroscene oil on the wood, when the flames leaped up into her breast
and face and the injury was done before help arrived.

    Wm. Dodd, a prominent resident of Newark, died on Saturday evening.

    Clamity at Scranton
        A terrible casualty occurred near Scraton, Pa., on Tuesday last, about 1 o'clock.  A large
number of women and girls were on the mountain gathering berries, when a terrific
thunderstorm arose.... Two women, Mrs. Mary Klein and Miss Caroline Schunck, were instantly
killed...

    Simulaneous Death of Two Sisters
        The family of Mr. John A. McDowell of Wilmington, Del., were sadly afflicted on
Wednesday, 6th inst., two of his daughters dying at nearly the same time.... About Christmas
time of last year, Esther, was attacked with the heart disease, which proved fatal at twelve
o'clock Wednesday.  Jennie, the younger sister, having about three weeks ago been attacked
with the typhoid fever... breathed her last twenty minutes after the death of her sister.

     Edmund D. Scudder, a son of Judge E. W. Scudder of the Supreme Court, living in Trenton,
died at Point Pleasant, on Thursday last, from congestion of the brain, brought on by the heat
and excitment of a game of base ball.  Deceased was a graduate of Princeton, class of '70, and a
young lawyer of considerable promise.  He was married four months ago to a daughter of
Senator Hewitt, with whose family he was spending the summer vacation.

State Notes:

    A few weeks ago, the death of William Coleman, of Millville, by drowning, was recorded.  He
left a widow and two children.  Since then the scarlet fever has carried off both children, leaving
the widow greatly prostrated by her bereavements.

    A few days ago, Isaac C. Dilks, a well known citizen of Glouster county, was taken suddently
ill and died in two hours.  On Tuesday of last week, Job S. Chew, a life-long resident of the
same county, was throwing sheaves for a threshing machine in his son's barn, when the grain
ceasing to fall, the son ascended the mow to learn the cause and there found his father dying.
The circumstances of his death were repeated in the presence of Ira Brown, at Glassboro, when
he fell from his chair and instantly expired.

    July 20, at Frenchtown, by John C. Soule, Wm. K. Rockafellow and Mary E. Neeld.
 

Deaths:

    Near White House, on the 9th inst., Freddie E., infant son of Garret and Christiana Conover,

    Strange Fatality in a Family
        George M. Moulton, brother of C. C. Moulton, of this city, was run over by a wagon at
Feeding Hills, Saturday afternoon last, and so injured that he died within an hour... He was 46

    Death of a Jersey Editor - Ex-Judge David Burnett, died at his residence in Ward street,
Paterson, N.J., on Thursday last.  He was born in Springfield, N.J., in 1800. When about 18
years old he went to New York and learned the printing and about Dec. 27th, 1822, he went to
Paterson and worked for nearly three years as a journeyman printer....

    The Reverend Dr. Gardiner Spring died in New York city on the 18th of August, in the 89th
year of his age...
 

Local Affairs:

    Runaway and Smash Up
        On Thursday afternoon last, while Mr. Jonas Sutton, of Sandbrook, was unloading
peaches at the South Branch depot in this place, his horse which was being held by his young
grandson, took fright and started off furiously, throwing both Mr. S. and the boy out of the
wagon, injuring the latter quite severly in one shoulder.  He was taken into the residence of
Moses K. Everitt, Esq., where he was properly cared for, and towards evening was taken home.
The horse brought up against a neighboring tie-post, where he badly wrecked the wagon.  Mr.
Sutton escaped injury.

    Suicide
        Mr. John Voorhees, living between Reaville and Clover Hill, committed suicide by hanging
on Tuesday last. It is said that he purchased the farm whereon he resided, last Spring, since
which time he had worried a good deal, thinking he had paid too much for it.  He was aged
about 50 years.
 

State Notes:

    Mary Nemis, of Jersey City, lay down upon a lounge in her room on Sunday night, and
though she did not complain of feeling ill, was soon afterward found dead by an inmate of the
house.  A post mortem examination revealed the fact that she died of heart disease.

    The Fatal Termination of a Drunken Spree
        George Beddalph, the captain of a Morris Canal boat arrived in Jersey City Tuesday and in
the evening he and a party of friends got on a spree on board the boat... Towards morning the
watcher fell asleep, and when he awoke again he was horrified to discover that Beddalph was
dead.

        Kentucky papers give an account of a deadly enmity which has existed between two
brothers, named Jasper and Clay Wadkins, for a year or two past, and has resulted in the
