Fifty Years
    We learn that Mr. and Mrs. Jacob Voorhees, at Voorhees' Corner, near Flemington,
celebrated the fiftieth year of their marriage on Wednesday of last week.
 

Died of His Injuries
    Mr. Leonard K. Higgins of this village, who met with the railroad accident about two weeks
ago, an account of which we gave in our last issue, died of his injuries on Thursday last, after
terrible suffering. He leave a wife and four children to mourn his untimely end.

Death of Col. Fowler
    Col. Samuel Fowler, Representative in the Assembly from Sussex County, died at his room in
the United States Hotel, in the city of Trenton, on Saturday evening about half past six o'clock.
 

    Hon. Edward Everitt died at his residence, Boston, on Sunday morning the 15th inst.

    A boy about five years of age, son of Elias T. Wood, of California, Hunterdon county, was
drowned in the mill pond at that place on Friday, the 13 ult. He was playing about the pond
and ventured on the ice, going too near the open water, when he slipped in and was drowned.

Sudden Death of Judge Ogden
    Hon. Elias B. D. Ogden, Justice of the Supreme Court of the State of New Jersey, died at his
residence in Elizabeth, on the 26th ult., of pneumonia, after an illness of four days.
 

    Thomas A. Hartwall, Esq., of Somerset County, died suddenly in New York on teh 24th ult.
He was a member of the bar.
 

Sudden Deaths
    William Johnson and William Cale, residing near Batsto, Burlington county, died very
suddenly last Sunday morning. They ate their suppers in good health on Saturday evening. A
few hours afterward they were seized with violent pain, followed by vomiting. Dr. Stills was
immediately sent for, and hastened to visit them, but before he arrived one had died and the
other lingered only a few hours. They were promising young persons of steady habits, eighteen
years old and near neighbors. The disease was maligant spotted fever. The black spots had
broken out upon them in a most noticeable manner.

Thursday last. He died of wounds received in the battle before Petersburg.

    Near Oak Grove, March 15th, Joseph, son of Exina G. and Eleanor Mattison, aged 37 years
one month and five days.

    John G. Morris, a former resident of Hightstown, was murdered on the 17th ult., at Oconce,
Illinois, while at supper with his family. The murderers fired at him through the window, the
ball going through his head and then plundered the house of several hundred dollars.

    Hon. Stacy G. Potts, late Associate Justice of the Supreme Court, died at his residence in
Trenton, on Sunday evening, the 9th inst., in the 66th year of his age. He has been an invalid
for several years.

    Capt. J. J. Bullock, of the 15th New Jersey Volunteers, is supposed to have been lost by the
destruction of steamer Gen. Lyon, on the 31st ult.

    Gen. William Cook died at this residence at Hoboken, on Friday evening last. General Cook
was the Chief Engineer of the Camden and Amboy Railroad Company and had his office at

    A Jerseyman named William Wainwright, employed as a brushmaker in New York,
committed suicide on Monday night, the 1st inst., by shooting himself through the head with a
musket. He placed the butt of the gun on the floor, put the muzzle in his month, and pulled
the trigger with his foot. No cause is assigned for the rash act. Deceased was fifty-one years of
age.

Drowned
    A lad named Enoch R. Green, aged 15 years, son of Mr. Manuel Green, of Delaware
township, was drowned on Sunday afternoon, the 11th inst., while bathing in a mill pond.
Another lad named Shepherd, made a desperate effort to rescue the drowning boy but was
unsuccessful.
 

Runaway and Probable Fatal Accident
    On Thursday last as Dr. Barclay, of Lebanon was driving a spirited pair of horses they
became frightened and started at a fearful speed, throwing the Doctor out of the wagon and
striking his head violently against a stone gate pillar, which left him senseless. Doubts are
entertained of his recovery. On Saturday morning he was still speechless. The accident
occurred about one mile north of New Germantown.
 

Died

    In Readington, Hunterdon Co., Sunday morning, June 11th, Mr. Garret Van Fleet, aged 102
years, 5 months 28 days.
 
 

June 28, 1865, Vol. XXVII, No. 45 (1400)

    Charles G. Merseilles, of the First New Jersey Cavalry, son of the Rev. A. Merseilles, of
Kingwood, Hunterdon County, was killed by guerrillas in Irving county, Georgia, on the 28th of
December last. Young Merseilles enlisted under Col. Halsted, and was taken prisoner in
October 1863, by the rebels and confined for a time at the Libby Prison, Richmond. Afterwards
he was moved to Andersonville, but this point being rendered unsafe by General Sherman's
operations he was in company with a number of other prisoners, placed on board the cars for
transportation further South. During the journey he succeeded in making his escape with
three others but was afterwards suprised and shot by a party of guerrillas who fairly riddled his
body with musket balls.

    Hon. George II Brown, one of the Judges of the Supreme Court, died at Somerville on the 1st
inst. He was a son of the celebrated Schoolmaster Rev. Isaac V. Brown, and was particularly
distinguished for his legal acumen and genial temperament...
 

Death of a Large Woman
    The widow of Sylvester Hann, died at her residence (Peggy's Puddle), on Monday, June 26th.
Her weight was 460 pounds. Her husband, who died some four years since, weighed about 500
pounds.

Sad Accident
    Elias Applegate, an engineer on a coal train of the Central Railroad, was instantly killed early
on Saturday morning 5th inst., at Hampton Junction. It seems that the deceased stepped off
his engin to take the number of cars on this train, and the engine blowing off steam at the
time, he was struck by a passing train, which he did not notice, knocking him under the cars
and the whole passing over him, completely cutting him in twain. He leaves a wife and two
small children, and also an aged widowed mother whom he helped support, to mourn his sad
death.

    In Cherryville, August 2d, Anna Ewing, daughter of John D. and Elizabeth Anderson, aged 1
year 3 months and 4 days.

    At Woodsville, Mercer County, N.J., on the 12th inst., Laura Augusta, eldest daughter of Wm.

Accident
    A promising little daughter of Robert L. Williams, Esq., of Frenchtown, was shockingly
injured on Friday of week before last. She was playing at the Grist Mill of John Lamper, and
caught hold of the rope used for drawing grain in the mill, when the children set the
machinery in motion and she was drawn up a distance of about twenty feet when she let go her
hold and fell upon a large stone injuring herself in a most shocking manner. At last accounts
little hopes were entertained of her recovery.
 

    The body of Mrs. Martha M. Bodine, of Boundbrook - the lady who was killed by the
explosion of the boiler of the propeller Molleson at Trenton afternoon, the 5th, floating in the
canal near Baker's Basin. The skull was fractured and she had sustained other injuries
sufficient to cause nearly instant death.

Sudden Death
    The Rev. Oliver Badgley, died very suddenly at his residence in Bonburg, Warren county, on
the morning of the 1st inst. Mr. B. had walked out to a field next to his barn, to see after some
stock, and while there fell. His daughter, who saw him fall ran immediately to his assistance
but when she reached him he was dead. His remains were taken to Morristown to be interred.
Mr. Badgley was a superannualed minister of the M. E. Church and had labored long and
zealously for the advancement of its cause. He leaves a wife and five children to morn his loss.

    The body of Captain Daniel Blauvelt, late of Company I, Eighth New Jersey Regiment, who
was killed in action at the battle of Tallepatcong Creek, near Coal Harbor, Va., on May 31st,
1864, has been recovered and taken to the family in Newark. The funeral service will be held
this week.
