A Sad Calamity
A sad accident occurred
last evening in West Cambridge, resulting in the death of a young lady
who was much beloved. While a party of young ladies and gentlemen
were amusing themselves upon the ice on Spy Pond, West Cambridge, it suddenly
gave way, and two daughters of Abel G. Peck, one daughter of Wm. J. Niles,
and two young men, sons of D. W. Horton and W. J. Lane, were precipitated
into the water. By the timely assistance of Mr. Chas. Griffiths,
four of the party were rescued; but Miss Persia Peck, after holding on
the ice until her strength failed, called to her friends that she could
hold on no longer, bad them adieu, and then suck beneath the cold element.
Miss Peck was about 16 years of age...

Man Killed
On Saturday afternoon,
December 31st, a quarrel took place between two labors on the Flemington
Rail Road, in the vicinity of Ringoes, in this county, named John Murphy
and Michael Lynch. It appears that Lynch struck at Murphy with his
hand, and immediately the latter struck the former with a pick - the sharp
end entering L's head about the brain, and remaining thus until he fell
to the ground. The offender fled instantaneously, and we understand
that strong efforts have been made by the authorities and others, to have
the fiend arrested, but as yet without success.

A genteel looking
man named Jacob Johnson, about thirty years of age, married a lady in Portland,
Maine, on the 19th day of December 1849, with whom he lived up to September
1852, when he disappeared. He went to Portsmouth, Va., where he attempted

wife commenced an investigation.... - Boston Courier.
Thomas Parr, of Thropshire, England, when a hundred and twenty years old, married a widow for his second wife, who lived with him twelve years and who stated that, during that time, he never betrayed any signs of age or infirmity. The King of England having heard of him, invited him to London in his hundred and fifty-second year. dead upon the sidewalk in front of the door. She breathed but a few
moments after being carried into the house, and died of fright - from the
effect of imagination, or from the wanton foolishness of some inconsiderate
person.

and the two rode off...

The Murder of Children By Their Mother
Confession of the
Unnatural Parent
We yesterday stated that two children had been murdered under circumstances
of peculiar atrocity and that the mother had been arrested upon the charge
of being instrumental in their destruction, but we were unable at that
time to furnish the particulars of the horrible affair. We have since
been enabled to procure a full statement, and the facts elicited prove
that the reality is even worse than was rumored.
It seems that the
mother of the slaughtered children, whose name is Pamela Snyder, has lived
for a number of years in the neighborhood of Rising Sun Village, in the
Twenty-Third Ward. She was in the habit of performing domestic labors
for families in the vicinity and for a number of years has been known by
the neighbors to lead a very dissolute life. She was known to have
given birth to several children, but they generally disappeared mysteriously,
and rumors were rife that they had been foully dealt with.
... The woman
was accordingly arrested on Sunday last and she voluntarily confessed to
the officers that she had, at different times, within the past six years,
given birth to six children, which had either died about the time of their
birth, or had been murdered by their mother!...

Mr. Arbour Hoff,

caught in some machinery of a Grist Mill of which he was proprietor.
He was engaged in building a fire in the wheel-house, and in coming out
stepped over a shaft, which catching the skirt of his coat, drew him around
it, entangling his left leg in the cogs of the wheel, and crushing it to
pieces all the way up the thigh, his entrails gushing from the wound thus
created. He lingered in great agony about six hours, when he expired,
retaining his senses, however, to the last. Mr. H. was about 55 years
