A Sad Calamity
A sad accident occurred last evening in West Cambridge, resulting in the death of a young lady who was much beloved.  While a party of young ladies and gentlemen were amusing themselves upon the ice on Spy Pond, West Cambridge, it suddenly gave way, and two daughters of Abel G. Peck, one daughter of Wm. J. Niles, and two young men, sons of D. W. Horton and W. J. Lane, were precipitated into the water.  By the timely assistance of Mr. Chas. Griffiths, four of the party were rescued; but Miss Persia Peck, after holding on the ice until her strength failed, called to her friends that she could hold on no longer, bad them adieu, and then suck beneath the cold element.  Miss Peck was about 16 years of age...

Man Killed

On Saturday afternoon, December 31st, a quarrel took place between two labors on the Flemington Rail Road, in the vicinity of Ringoes, in this county, named John Murphy and Michael Lynch.  It appears that Lynch struck at Murphy with his hand, and immediately the latter struck the former with a pick - the sharp end entering L's head about the brain, and remaining thus until he fell to the ground.  The offender fled instantaneously, and we understand that strong efforts have been made by the authorities and others, to have the fiend arrested, but as yet without success.

Death of Thomas Ritchie
Several of our exchanges come to us clad in mouring in consequence of the death of the venerable Thomas Ritchie.  We share in the regrets expressed by them....
Mr. Ritchie died in the 76th year;...  Several of our eminent men have died on the 4th of July, as if Providence designed to show to imperfect man, that no day, however bright, shall pass off without a cloud or however proud, shall end without humility.  But a few hours more, and Mr. Ritchie would have died as did Jefferson, Adams, and Monroe, on the anniversary of American Independence.

Horrible Affair in Tennessee
A letter from Danbridge, Tennessee, to the Knoxville Register, dated June 21st, says: On last Wednesday night, whilst Elijah Moore, his wife and sister-in-law, Miss Lotspeech, were at home, a servant stole quietly into the room in which they were sleeping, and murdered Moore with an axe.
The murderer then violated the person of Miss Lotspeech, the sister of Mrs. Moore.  The murderer was apprehended and tied to a tree, in sight of his murdered master's house, a large pile of rich pine was built around him and then set on fire and burned to ashes, in the presence of 1200 or 1500 persons.

Horrible Murderer of Three Persons
A most shocking murder was committed about twelve miles above Dandridge, Tenn., on French Broad River, on Wednesday night, the 14th inst.  Mr. Elijah Moore, his wife, and sister-in-law, were found this morning murdered in their beds.  They all occupied the same room.  Mr. Moore and his wife were lying apparently as they had gone to sleep.  Several deep gashes were cut upon their heads, the blows having been inflicted by an axe, which was found in the room with blood upon it.  Mr. Moore's sister-in-law, a young lady of twenty years old, seemed to have struggled violently.  Suspicion rests upon a negro man belonging to Mr. Moore, who is missing, having taken with him the most of his clothes... - Rondout New York Courier.  (See above "Horrible Affair in Tennessee").

The Murder of Children By Their Mother
    Confession of the Unnatural Parent
We yesterday stated that two children had been murdered under circumstances of peculiar atrocity and that the mother had been arrested upon the charge of being instrumental in their destruction, but we were unable at that time to furnish the particulars of the horrible affair.  We have since been enabled to procure a full statement, and the facts elicited prove that the reality is even worse than was rumored.
It seems that the mother of the slaughtered children, whose name is Pamela Snyder, has lived for a number of years in the neighborhood of Rising Sun Village, in the Twenty-Third Ward.  She was in the habit of performing domestic labors for families in the vicinity and for a number of years has been known by the neighbors to lead a very dissolute life.  She was known to have given birth to several children, but they generally disappeared mysteriously, and rumors were rife that they had been foully dealt with.
...  The woman was accordingly arrested on Sunday last and she voluntarily confessed to the officers that she had, at different times, within the past six years, given birth to six children, which had either died about the time of their birth, or had been murdered by their mother!...
